Social Media Expert: Bullshit Job Title
So you call yourself a social media consultant? It seems to be a growing job description these days. But it’s total bullshit. Anyone can do this and I encourage you to, doubly so if you own a business and are thinking about hiring one of these so called “experts”.
The first and foremost reason is simple. This is your business, why would you hire someone else to do your PR for you? Makes sense if you’re a million dollar or billion dollar company, sure. I know a company that is six employees and does a few million in sales a year. Even though they could afford hiring one of these “experts” they are a small enough team where they shouldn’t.
No one knows your business better than you. Rather than bringing someone new on the team and have them learn everything, use what you have. Use who you have.
It’s not hard. Learning how to use these social media tools and websites is not hard. Granted I’ve been using them for a long time, just dedicate a weekend to learn how to use Twitter or Facebook for your business. You will quickly see just how easy it is to leverage.
To you social media “experts”: it’s time to expand your job title. Do more than just consult for a few days to set up accounts. Get hired as an employee. Be a part of the company. Do more than just updating twitter with some new status. Make some videos. Get wild.
